The main theme of the conference is the role of wonder in education and children’s development, and its relation to children’s (present or future) flourishing. It is an explicit purpose of the conference to bring together educational theorists, education scientists, philosophers, psychologists and members of other disciplines interested in wonder (or closely related topics) and its relation to education and/or human flourishing. Conceptual, normative, and empirical papers are all welcome. Contributors are expected to discuss wonder or closely related topics, preferably in relation to children’s education, development, and/or flourishing. Possible topics for contributions are:

Submission of Abstracts (500 words): 1 June 2018
Submission of Full Papers (6000-8000 words): 1 December 2018
Direct enquiries and submissions to: gottfried.schweiger@sbg.ac.at
Website: http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/ah/rjge-si-global-children

Children are a group that has been neglected in most theories of global justice so far, which is especially striking since children are victims of severe injustices, face several disadvantages compared to adults and nearly all indicators to measure global injustice show that they are a particular deprived group. For example, children show higher rates of poverty in most developing countries as well as in developed countries. Many children are undernourished and malnourished; they are exploited through forced labor, sexual abuse and trafficking; and they are recruited as combatants in violent conflicts. There is therefore a strong need for improvements in the lives of children around the world.

However, what global justice demands for children and how it can be achieved has not been fleshed out in detail. Certainly, there are important policy approaches available, like the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Sustainable Development Goals, and monitoring initiatives such as UNICEF’s Innocenti Report Cards. Longstanding philosophical literature on children’s rights has recently been complemented by first steps to modify existing theories of global justice, such as the Capability Approach, to fit for children. Much more reflection and research is needed nonetheless. Thus the aim of this Special Issue is to advance our understanding of the place of children in theories of global justice, both to indicate what global justice for children demands and to establish how justice can be achieved and sustained.

Children are different from adults in several important ways and in regard to, for example, their physical, cognitive and emotional development as well as their social status. But such widely held assumptions about children as particularly vulnerable and worthy of protection are not fully accounted for. Furthermore, the particularity of childhood makes it necessary to think about child-sensitive and child-specific responses to the injustices they face and how they can be implemented on a global level. Most policy measures that fit for adults often do not fit well for children, and concerns of intergenerational justice may apply to their case, as they apply for generations to come. Adult-focused moral and political theories have to be extended, modified or substantially altered in order to apply to children. This holds also for the applied field of global justice, in which philosophical theories about childhood have not had an international focus so far.

We look for contributions that will deepen and broaden understanding of the current situation of children globally, regarding both the injustices they face and how these injustices may be faced. Contributions could also further advance ongoing debates on the moral and justice-based entitlements of children and their rights (and also duties) on a global scale. We also welcome papers that analyze and scrutinize the responsibilities of actors and agents of global justice for children, and writing that helps to devise policies to improve children’s lives.

We hope to attract contributions from different theoretical approaches and backgrounds, especially including those outside of the mainstream of theories of global justice. Of particular interest are contributions that look into the intersection of disadvantages and injustices in children's lives based on their gender and sex, race, ethnicity, indigeneity or health status. Contributions from scholars based in the Global South are particularly encouraged.

Education is a highly controversial and contested issue, but enduring conflict and political debate, it seems, are not always cherished virtues in academia. We offer a space for taking positions – and are convinced that positioning opens up a space ’beyond’ academic research. We wish to push the established boundaries between quantitative and qualitative schools of thought, micro and macro approaches, theoretical and empirical research – and stimulate new, possibly surprising alignments. We do not yet know what exactly we are helping to create with on_education – but are attracted by the ambiguity and indeterminacy of it all. We hope that our readers will be as open-minded, committed and curious as we are!

Education is a highly controversial issue that touches on and permeates almost all aspects of life in modern societies. on_education aims to stimulate public and academic debate on the theory and practice of education. As a freely accessible online journal, it provides a forum for the international research community, as well as for the broader public. By bringing together scholars, journalists, bloggers, politicians, and practitioners, on_education should help to advance the notion of building bridges that challenge established divisions and break up “echo chambers”. on_education offers a publicly visible and accessible discursive space in which representatives of divergent schools of thought, methodological approaches, and political perspectives, can engage in constructive debates on educational topics.

on_education publishes three issues a year. Each issue focuses on one topic of current interest and contains between five and seven short essays or opinion pieces by invited contributors. An editorial provides an overview of the issue and an introduction to the debate in question. To facilitate the discussion, readers will be able to participate by commenting on the contributions.
– Philosophische Perspektiven“.

Keynote Speakers auf der Tagung sind:

Bernd Ladwig (Berlin)

Bryan Warnick (Ohio State)

Harry Brighouse (Wisconsin)

Harvey Siegel (Miami)

Maeve Cooke (Dublin)

Micha Brumlik, (Frankfurt)

Penny Enslin (Glasgow)

While neglected for a long time, the moral and political status of children has aroused considerable attention in the last years. Philosophers are increasingly interested in the challenges children and childhood pose for ethical theories and the normative concepts suitable for grasping the special situation of children. Children’s rights, the well-being of children, the place of children in theories of justice and the value of childhood have been discussed extensively and there is a vivid debate on issues like educational justice and the family as the central institution for childrearing. Still, there are many controversies going on which need further examination, e.g. regarding the vulnerability of children, their agency, the nature of childhood and the implications different phases of childhood have for the normative status of the child, e.g. when considering the autonomy and rights of teenagers. In addition there is the question on what ethical theories can contribute to the evaluation and improvement of dangers children are facing currently, like child poverty, obesity or the economization of childhood.

This conference wants to bring together philosophers and interested scholars from other disciplines working on these and related subjects. It aims to be a forum for the most recent developments in philosophy and childhood. Submissions are welcome from all fields of philosophy where the moral and political status of children is discussed: social and political philosophy, philosophy of law, medical ethics, philosophy of education, applied ethics etc.

The Organizing Committee invites the submission of abstracts for single papers and thematic panels on all topics of philosophy and childhood.

Please submit an abstract of 350 words ready for blind review using the submission form on the conference homepage: www.philosophy-childhood.org.

The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2017, notifications will be sent out approximately three weeks after this deadline. If you run into any troubles with your submission please email the organizers: gunter.graf[a]sbg.ac.at

hinterfragen.

Guest editors: Steinar Bøyum and Espen Gamlund
Deadline for submission: November 7, 2016

The family is a central institution in most societies, including liberal democratic ones. Most importantly, it is the home of intimate relationships between parents and children. There are two main normative dimensions to this relationship. First, there is the moral relation between parents and their children, which is governed by certain duties and rights, such as the rights of children to receive care, and the corresponding duties of parents to provide care for their children. Parents are also considered to have certain rights with respect to their children, such as the right to decide what kind of education their children should receive. But what is the proper scope of these parental rights? How do we balance these rights against the interests and rights of the children?

Second, the relation between parents and children must also be seen in a wider social context. Which rights and duties do parents have with respect to their children when their decisions affect other people and society at large? What is the scope of parental partiality? How should parental rights be balanced against social justice? Should, for instance, parents be allowed to establish private schools or home-school their children, even when this contributes to social inequality?

In this special issue, we welcome papers that address normative questions concerning the relationship between parents and children in the context of the family. The papers can explore theoretical questions about the duties and rights of parenthood, or the interests and rights of children, or they can explore more applied questions about the family in the context of education, health, or social justice.

The social and cultural composition of liberal democracies is constantly changing. This is not only due to every society´s need to integrate newcomers into its socio-political order to survive across generations but also because the ethos of transformation and social change is part and parcel of the very idea of democracy. One of the major rationales of civic education in pluralistic societies, however, is to safeguard and preserve the intergenerational continuity of constitutive ideals of liberal democracies, most importantly freedom, equality, and tolerance, without neglecting the irreducible diversity of religious and cultural traditions. Since these ideals are all hotly disputed, if not essentially contested, there is considerable theoretical and political disagreement concerning the constitutive elements of good citizenship and a shared political ethos that ensure the existence and stability of liberal democracies over time. These disagreements are grounded in a diversity of competing political and philosophical traditions (e.g., different conceptions of political liberalism; republicanism; communitarianism, multiculturalism), culturally embedded narratives (e.g., `salad bowl´, `cultural mosaic´), and corresponding conceptions of civic education and citizenship (e.g., cosmopolitan vs. particularistic conceptions). This workshop aims to shed light on the complex relationship between civic education, democracy, and citizenship by focussing on questions such as the following:

Should children have the full rights and obligations of citizens? What is the specific relation between paternalism and participation in different accounts of civic education? To what extent are attempts to encourage desirable forms of civic behaviour via `nudges´ and other social arrangements legitimate?

What are legitimate methods and aims of civic education (e.g., tolerance, personal and/or political autonomy, respect, loyalty, helpfulness)? What kind of knowledge, skills and dispositions are constitutive of civic virtues? How should virtue ethicists respond to the situationist critique? What constitutes good citizenship? What is the specific relation between different conceptions of good citizenship and different conceptions of the good life? How should different ideals of the good citizen be justified in the context of pluralistic societies? What is the specific relation between liberal legitimacy, autonomy facilitation or promotion, and the cultivation of civic virtues?

How should conflicts between the interests of the liberal state, communities, families and children be resolved (e.g., debates about enforcing liberalism, exit rights and entrance paths)? How should liberal democracies deal with political resistance and critique in educational institutions and with individuals and groups that do not accept basic democratic values?

What is the legitimate role of public schools in fostering civic virtues? How should the educational systems of liberal democracies deal with different forms of social and cultural heterogeneity? What are the challenges that migration movements present for the theory and practice of civic education? Should schools teach patriotism (or cosmopolitanism or something else)? What is the role of public schools in bringing about societal change.

How much social and evaluative cohesion is necessary for the stability of the political cultures of liberal democracies? What is the specific relationship between democratic life forms, a democratic civil society and the institutions of representative democracy?

How should we conceptualize the differences and relations between ideal and non-ideal theorizing, between theory and practice and between philosophy and empirical research in the context of debates about civic education?

Kinderrechte?" statt.
<span style="font-family: "Roboto Condensed Light"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Tagungsbeschreibung:

<span style="font-family: "Roboto Condensed Light"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">In

<span style="font-family: "Roboto Condensed Light"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">In

<span style="font-family: "Roboto Condensed Light"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

<span style="font-family: "Roboto Condensed Light"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Doch

<span style="font-family: "Roboto Condensed Light"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Neben
